Digital Renter, one of Silicon Mountain’s promising startups has registered a ground-breaking victory. The team has won the grand prize (500,000frs) of the E-nkap Hackathon. If you want to know more about this competition, read Fongoh Martin’s story below.
“After four days of sleepless nights coding, persevering the unfriendly Douala climatic conditions and learning, my team, Digital Renter was able to integrate the e-nkap mobile payment API into the Digital Renter platform. This helped us win the half a million-prize set up by Maviance Cameroon in partnership with Leapfrog and ActivSpaces, Fongoh Martin, Founder of Digital Renter explained.
We worked both within and out of the competition hall at ActivSpaces Douala from day one November 26, to the last day November 30, 2018 with little or no rest. We were competing with six other groups but fortunately for us, three of them backed out of the competition and we were left with just three other groups to compete with on the D-day. We won because we were able to satisfy the aspirations of the judges. Our judges (Dr. Leslie Nkwenti Asong and Romain Blaise Bouani) rated our work on testing, design, documentation, automated development and architecture.
Our task was to use four days to integrate the e-nkap payment system into our applications which we succeeded to do. Before reaching Douala, my team and I already had the conviction that we will win this competition. Probably because of the good jobs we have been doing for our clients. And our performance and subsequent results on the last day confirmed our predictions. Digital Renter has aided GCE Markers during the 2018/2019 marking session to find comfortable rooms to rent during their marking period in Buea. https://www.activspaces.com/blog/digital-renter-to-aid-buea-gce-markers-find-accomodation-students-too-to-make-some-cash/

Taking part in this competition/Hackathon has been a life-changer. Apart from the money, Dr. Leslie Nkwenti, Managing Director of Maviance Cameroon (one of the fastest growing IT Companies in Cameroon) has confirmed our certification as developers working to integrate the e-nkap aggregator to E-commerce sites. Moreover, my partner, Ngenge Senior used just four days to learn new stuffs like React Native. As earlier mentioned on day one of the Hackathon, I plan to use this money to expand my business from Buea to other parts of Cameroon and subsequently the world.

Maviance Cameroon as sponsor of the Hackathon is including participants into its team of developers. These developers will act as ambassadors and do the necessary work when customers will need to integrate e-nkap API in their businesses. As an IT company wishing to bring the best out Cameroonian developers, another Hackathon will be organized in Buea in the months ahead to give young developers another opportunity to prove their know how and learn from experts.
Silicon Mountain Community’s Reaction
The excitement was excessive, pride was obvious and encouragement heightened. The Digital Renter team once again brought together the Silicon Mountain Community members on December 12, 2018 to present to them the trophy and officially announce the achievement added to the community’s name. More than 30 community members came to celebrate with the winning team and pledged their support where need be.
There were words of appreciation from the ActivSpaces team to the sponsors of the Hackathon, Maviance Cameroon and Leapfrog.
It was also time for some Digital Renter clients to give testimonies of the help the team has rendered to them. It is certain there is more to come. We await the release of the team’s second platform, Another Eye.
Digital Renter’s victory has awoken the zeal in developers in Buea to take part in the next Hackathon to take place in 2019 at ActivSpaces Buea.
